A fixed resistance laid in a mesh — the whole floor becomes the heater, slowly.

Terminals
  • Cold tail — the mains lead that runs to the thermostat
  • Factory joint between the cold tail and the heating cable
  • Floor probe (sensor) leads — low voltage, to the thermostat
  • Earth braid or screen, bonded at the thermostat
  • Heating cable — a series resistance in a fluoropolymer jacket
  • Fibreglass mesh backing — sets the spacing
  • Factory joint — the only joint allowed in the screed
  • Cold tail — the unheated lead back to the connection box
  • Floor temperature probe in its own conduit

⚠ Safety note

The mat is a fixed load buried in screed, so the insulation-resistance and continuity tests are done three times: before it is laid, after the screed goes down, and before it is tiled. Never cut the heating cable to shorten it — that changes the resistance and the wattage, and any joint buried in the floor will fail.
