Terminals
  • Positive (+) — red collar, the first connection made
  • Negative (−) — black collar, the last connection broken
  • Battery-to-battery links for series (24 V) or parallel (more Ah)
  • Plates and separators — lead-acid, or cells in a lithium pack
  • Electrolyte — flooded, AGM or gel
  • Case with venting — hydrogen is given off when charging
  • Terminal posts — tapered lead or threaded insert
  • State of charge and cycle life ratings (Ah, DoD, cycles)

⚠ Safety note

A battery can deliver hundreds of amps into a short circuit, so the fuse belongs at the battery terminal, not at the load end. Connect the positive first and disconnect the negative first, keep spanners away from the other post while one is tightened, and never charge a sealed battery in an unventilated space.
