EV Charge Point

A controlled socket that talks to the car before it ever energises the cable.

Terminals
  • L / N / E supply from a dedicated RCBO
  • CP (control pilot) — the signalling line to the vehicle
  • PP (proximity pilot) — tells the unit what cable is plugged in
  • Type 2 socket or tethered lead
  • Contactor inside the unit — energised only after the handshake
  • Control pilot circuit — sets the available current by PWM duty cycle
  • 6 mA DC leakage detection — required because DC blinds a Type A RCD
  • PEN-loss (open-circuit neutral) protection on PME supplies
  • LED status ring — standby, charging, fault
  • Cable entry and gland at the bottom of the enclosure

⚠ Safety note

A charge point is fixed electrical equipment on a PME supply, so the protective earth arrangement matters as much as the cable size. Where the supply is TN-C-S the installation normally needs an earth electrode or a PEN-loss device that disconnects all poles including earth — the one place in a domestic installation where switching the earth conductor is permitted.
