Bell / Buzzer

A solenoid that hammers a gong: the load at the far end of the doorbell circuit.

Terminals
  • Two terminals on a simple AC bell or buzzer
  • Earth where the bell has a metal case
  • Gong — the metal dome or plate that makes the sound
  • Striker — the arm that hits it
  • Solenoid coil — pulls the armature in when energised
  • Contacts — break the circuit so the striker springs back and strikes again
  • Base and mounting holes
  • Bell transformer — steps 230 V down to 8–12 V

⚠ Safety note

Bell circuits usually run at extra-low voltage, but the transformer feeding them is mains. It must be mounted where it cannot be touched accidentally, be short-circuit protected, and be isolated before any work. A bell that hums without ringing usually has a broken striker or a seized armature, not an electrical fault.
