Cells in series make the voltage, cells in parallel make the current — the frame carries neither.
- Tempered glass front — 3–4 mm, carries the mechanical load
- Encapsulant (EVA) — seals the cells out of the weather
- Mono or poly cells — typically 60 or 72, cut into half or third cells
- Busbar and finger ribbons — collect current off each cell
- Backsheet — the insulating rear layer
- Junction box with bypass diodes and MC4 leads
